Question: Guess what it is?

Hint: To make one at home, you need 4 fresh ingredients. The fast food version isn't so simple. Before you take your next slurp (hint) here's a partial list of the fast food version's secret ingredients:

amyl acetate
amyl butyrate
amyl valerate
anethol
anisyl formate
benzyl acetate
benzyl isobutyrate
butyric acid
cinnamyl isobutyrate
cinnamyl valerate
cognac essential oil
diacetyl
dipropyl ketone

(Give up? Come on, we are only on the d's...)

Scroll down for the other 36 secret ingredients and to see what other chemicals you are ingesting each time you take a slurp...

Did you Guess Correct?

Answer: artificial-strawberry-flavoring

Chemical list for artificial-strawberry-flavoring

A typical artificial strawberry flavor, like the kind found in a Mickey D's or BK strawberry milk shake, contains the following fake flavor additives not shown on their ingredients list:

New Page 1

ethyl acetate
ethyl amyl ketone
ethyl butyrate
ethyl cinnamate
ethyl heptanoate
ethyl heptylate
ethyl lactate
ethyl methylphenylglycidate
ethyl nitrate
ethyl propionate
ethyl valerate
heliotropin
hydroxyphenyl-2-butanone (10 percent solution in alcohol)
a-ionone
isobutyl anthranilate
isobutyl butyrate
lemon essential oil
maltol
4-methylacetophenone
methyl anthranilate
methyl benzoate
methyl cinnamate
methyl heptine carbonate
methyl naphthyl ketone
methyl salicylate
mint essential oil
neroli essential oil
nerolin
neryl isobutyrate
orris butter
phenethyl alcohol
rose
rum ether
g-undecalactone
vanillin and solvent

If you don't know what all these chemicals could be doing to you, well, either do they, but they don't need to tell you by law because the U.S. government does not require flavor companies to list their additives.

This little known secret is to help the companies hide their " secret flavor formulas " and it also is effective at hiding the fact that the food flavorings often contain more ingredients than the foods being given some fake taste.

By the way, here's the rest of the ingredients you might find in a fast-food strawberry milkshake: milkfat and nonfat milk, sugar, sweet whey, high-fructose corn syrup, guar gum, monoglycerides and diglycerides, cellulose gum, sodium phosphate, carrageenan, citric acid, E129 and of course that one little hidden gem, artificial strawberry flavor. Now you know the rest of the story!
