Considering a nutrition-coach?

Here's what Shape Magazine wanted to know...

This interview was conducted in 2006 in response to a request from Shape Magazine. The magazine was looking for a nutrition coach for a local columnist that was selected for Shape's 2007 weight loss diary. I posted this information to my site because I feel it provides a great FAQ tip sheet for anyone interested in hiring a nutrition coach.

How many years have you worked as a nutritionist or dietitian? If you have a short bio you can send, please attach it to this request for more information about your nutrition coaching services.

Please list your credentials (degrees, certifications, etc.). If this is already covered in your bio, please disregard.

David- My-Nutrition-Coach.com replies:

I have been a registered dietitian for 16 years and in private practice for 14 of those years. I have a somewhat distinctive combination of credentials in that I am also a licensed physical therapist. With this recipe of credentials I have been successful at providing a unique approach to total care for my clients.

What's your counseling philosophy? How would you go about getting our new Weight-Loss Diary columnist excited about nutrition? (Her background information is attached.)

David- My-Nutrition-Coach.com replies:

I feel one of my best strengths is that of an educator. I have a strong background in clinical research and behavioral medicine and stay up to date with all new validated technologies available to help provide cutting edge tools for motivating and objectively measuring client progress. I also feel it is important to first look at where in the process of change that client is and my counseling philosophy changes based upon each individual’s nutrition readiness.

One such beneficial tool for change I have utilized in my nutrition practice is metabolic measurement.

For more on how I begin with RMR measurement as an entry point to educate clients visit this link explaining metabolic measurement.

I have also developed several online meal planning options and educational tools to keep connected with my clients and help track progress. These tools help take metabolic measurement to the next level and get the client to the next phase of nutrition action.

How could you get a new client excited about nutrition incorporating some of the unique technologies you utilize in your practice?

David- My-Nutrition-Coach.com replies:

In the case of your new columnist, she mentioned in her application that she was fearful that her changing metabolism may now make it more difficult to make changes to her body.

Many of my clients have approached me with similar fears. I find that most people have a gut-level understanding of metabolism- they know they have one- but being able to quickly measure a resting rate gives a great benchmark or metabolic fingerprint for establishing goals. The ability to quickly and accurately measure metabolism (RMR) gets clients attention. No more guessing at how much you should be eating because it is right there in front of you. Much like measuring your own blood pressure, metabolic measurement provides a tangible health marker that you can now quickly monitor. I usually develop a personal nutrition and exercise plan and map out a course of action which enable my clients to visualize, track, and communicate their results with me based in part on the results of their RMR.

Gabrielle-Shape.com writes:

Please provide two former clients as references.

David- My-Nutrition-Coach.com replies:

I generally maintain all client records in confidence and because of HIPPA regulations need to refrain from disclosing names unless I receive a signed release from that client. I can make this information available if needed but would need to disclose to client beforehand. I have posted several client success stories online from clients who have previously agreed to have me share their stories on my website.
