TOP 10 NUTRITION QUACK LIST
I've started my own "TOP 10" list of the BIGGEST nutrition scam products and nutrition quacks to AVOID
Quack #1- Mr. Trudeau and "Weight Loss Cures..."
#1 Quack holding top ranking...
Mr. Trudeau remains on the top of my list. I wrote about his scam in a recent article but a reader sent me in this update that helped keep Mr. Trudeau on the top of the quack list for this month.
"An update on Mr. Trudeau and your article from last month's ezine on weight loss cures and "What's Holding You Back?". I found this bit of dirt to add to your story which your readers might find interesting.
"In September 2004, after having been charged repeatedly with false advertising, infomercial marketer Kevin Trudeau became bound by an FTC consent agreement under which he agreed to pay a $2 million penalty and be banned from appearing in, producing, or disseminating future infomercials that advertise any type of product, service, or program to the public, except for "truthful infomercials for books, newsletters, and other informational publications." An FTC official stated that the ban was "meant to shut down an infomercial empire that has misled American consumers for years."
Around the time that the consent order was signed, Trudeau began flooding the airwaves with a 30-minute infomercial for a book called Natural Cures “They” Don’t Want You to Know About. Although the infomercial suggested that the book would make specific recommendations for specific problems, it actually did not.
FYI- The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them.
What? The Greatest Vitamin in the World" Promoter Investigated
On August 21, 2007, the Arizona Republic newspaper reported that postal inspectors have seized documents at the home and business of Don Lapre, seller of "The Greatest Vitamin in the World." Lapre has not been charged, but a search-warrant affidavit indicated that agents are gathering evidence of possible mail, wire, and telemarketing fraud. According to the article, the Better Business Bureau assigned an "unsatisfactory" rating to Greatest Vitamin in the World and has received 473 complains about the company in the past three years.
Additional information about Lapre and "The Greatest Vitamin in the World" has been reported by Quackwatch.org.
[Personal Sidebar]You have to see Mr. Lapre's background. Think he knows nutrition? Guess again... Go to the Quackwatch.org article for the scoop http://www.quackwatch.org/11Ind/lapre.html
I also did my own research on this "Greatest Vitamin" through an independent testing agency I subscribe to, Consumerlab.com
The vitamin was tested by ConsumerLab.com in the 2007 Product Review of Multivitamin/Multimineral Supplements.- Results: It did not pass. Surprised?
Final analysis: In July 2005, the FDA ordered Lapre to stop claiming that his vitamin product can prevent or cure a long list of diseases. Although Lapre made superficial changes in his product descriptions, the FDA warned again in 2006 that consumer testimonials and other statements on his Web site still evidence that the product is intended to treat, cure, prevent, or mitigate diabetes, cancer, arthritis, and other diseases.
We'll be adding to this list every time another nutrition quack sounds off in the news. If you have a product or questionable nutrition promoter you think merits a look for my top 10 list please contact me here through this link.
