About Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Use this chart to quickly check your dietary omega ratios

By now

By now, most people know not all fats are bad. In fact, Omega-3 fatty acids are considered the "good fats" which help to balance the "bad fats" in your diet. While it is beyond the scope of this article to go through the specific benefits of each of the Omega-3's (ALA,EPA,DHA), you can get a more comprehensive review by ordering a copy of my latest book, the Smart Moves 7-Day Nutrition Action Guide.

Many experts place Omegas under the umbrella of Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's), meaning they must be obtained from the diet. As I mention in my book, the correct balance or ratio between these essential fatty acids from Omega-3's and a type of fatty acid known as Omega-6 is important for peak well-being.

What's your ratio?

Some experts believe a ratio of 1:1 with Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids is best for balancing the functioning of cells in your body including regulatingcell growth, inflammation, blood clotting, nerve transmission, blood pressure, circulation, muscle function -and well, you get the picture-the balance of fatty
acids in your body is important.

Unfortunately, the average American diet is estimated at a 20:1 ratio (Omega-6 : Omega-3)

Experts believe that this wildly unbalanced ratio may be the main reason behind the record level of chronic diseases in America.
