Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)

The Basics:

What is metabolism? How does it relate to my resting metabolic rate?

Metabolism is the biochemical process of combining nutrients with oxygen to release the energy our bodies need to function. Metabolism is typically measured in kilocalories or, more commonly, calories. The term resting metabolic rate represents the calories needed for maintaining basic body functions. Activity calories are generally added to support daily movement (occupational and lifestyle), and the energy cost of exercise or planned activity.

What is RMR?

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) represents the calories the body burns to maintain vital body functions (heart rate, brain function, breathing). In simple terms, it is the number of calories a person would burn if they were awake, but at rest all day. RMR can represent up to 75% of a person’s total metabolism if they are inactive or lead a sedentary lifestyle.

Why is it necessary to measure RMR?

Since your resting metabolic rate accounts for up to 75% of the total calories we need each day, it’s a critical piece of information to appropriately establish daily calorie needs, whether we’re trying to lose or maintain weight. Most healthcare professionals recognize that metabolism is impacted by a variety of characteristics such as fever, stress, illness, high fitness, obesity, active weight loss, smoking, etc.

When managing a client or patient’s nutritional needs and calorie requirements, knowledge of RMR is critically important. If you are using My-Nutrition-Coach.com to achieve your weight loss or nutrition goals you already know that RMR is utilized in the process of establishing your unique nutrition plan.

Traditionally, healthcare professionals, who have not had access to measurement technology, have relied on estimates of RMR. Because metabolism is different among individuals, estimating caloric needs can lead to errors, and inaccurate calorie budgets (see the study results below).

As a result of these estimates, individuals can be both over or under eating, and not be successful in reaching their personal goals. As technology advances, professionals must reassess their practices. The most accurate assessment of caloric needs is by measuring oxygen consumption and determining individual metabolism. The BodyGem® device is just one of the state of the art tools available at select My-Nutriton-Coach.com assessment locations that will provide information vital for determining a personalized calorie budget, based on an individuals unique metabolism.

Consider these metabolism facts....

metabolism-study If you’re just consuming an extra 100 calories per day over your current "Burn Rate" (RMR), you’re gaining 10 pounds of unhealthy bodyfat a year!

WOW! A study published in the journal Metabolism compared women of the same height, age, and weight and found that their metabolic rates varied by almost 900 calories a day!

Did you know? Existing charts in a doctor’s office or health facility estimate RMR from a population based predictive equation that was developed in 1919. Clinical research has shown that this outdated formula is unreliable for 1 of every 3 estimations. As a result, one-third of all people who base their nutrition plan on these unreliable figures or a generic RMR will not get the results they desire. Guessing at your burn rate often results in a poor end result and in many cases the outcome is weight gain not weight loss!

Everyone has a unique metabolic rate, and the only way to know yours for sure is to have it measured.
